A College Students Advice

I asked a recent grad of my school for advice and to give a glimpse of college life. Is it better out there?

Question #1- How is college different than high school?

Corinne's answer- "College is like a trial run of adulthood. It's a place where you can fail a few times and you have an opportunity to learn and grow from it with minimal consequences. It's different from high school in every way imaginable. It's you and your future, true independence, you have the reins and you can fly. And if you happen to fall every now and then, there are resources and faculty whose whole job is to get you back in the air."

Question#2- Do you think differently about school now that you're in college compared to when you were in high school?

Corinne's answer- "Yes totally! It's less ugh homework and more wooo homework because it's work I actually want to be doing."

Question #3- What has your experience been like transitioning from high school to college?

Corinne's answer- "It was something I was personally ready for, the independence, the workload, being away from home, even though I love my home, it was some of the first moments where I can remember consistently feeling like a functioning member of society. It's liberating! Some of my friends had a hard time with the transition though, it's not always easy to be far away from home and suddenly have all of these responsibilities, but what got them through was finding a community, a support system, using campus resources for when it felt like too much. My best piece of advice would be to ask for help. It is the best thing you can do for yourself."

Question #4- Lastly what advice do you have for a struggling Junior that hates school, as known as me?

Corinne's answer- "Oh god! Use this time and the resources at school to find what you love and figure out how to do it every day. Try everything too, even if you think you'll hate it, then you can know for sure and you will never be able to say you didn't try. Also investing time in a good book will help! I've never read for leisure before this year and I feel that it's changed my life, it also helps solidify what you are interested in and a potential passion you may have. It makes the days more fulfilling and graduation more satisfying because you can reflect on this time, not as four long wasted years, but as an exploratory, exciting time. Finding love and passion in something that's bigger than you is the best thing you can do for yourself, not just for getting out of high school, but for your whole life.
